Rekhyt, meaning lapwing in Egpytian language. It is a symbol for a slave, which is quite fitting, as usually the lapwing was drawn with it’s wings pinned back, thus preventing it from flying. It’s as if the lapwing was never able to do what it really wanted to do: fly. It was bound to ground like a slave and the one who bound it, was the one who thus became its master.

I just cry every time I read the Ptolemy’s Gate again after reading stuff like this…

I’ve been surprised by how little criticism I’ve got. Harry Potter’s been taking all the flak. I’m a great fan of J.K. Rowling, but the people-mainly from America’s Bible Belt - who complain that Harry Potter promotes Satanism or witchcraft obviously haven’t got enough in their lives. Meanwhile, I’ve been flying under the radar, saying things that are far more subversive than anything poor old Harry has said. My books are about killing God.

It’s two thousand, one hundred, and twenty-nine years since Ptolemy died. He was fourteen. Eight world empires have risen up and fallen away since that day, and I still carry his face. Who do you think’s the lucky one?
